[Maybe it's just a bit chilly out, but the man seated on a bench outside the Pokemon Center and the Meowstic curled up in his lap don't appear to mind much. The white, fluffy Vulpix snoozing beside them seems quite comfortable, even.
A handwritten sign with a mediocre little doodle of her face propped up behind the fox might catch the eye, reading: I'm looking for a home! Come meet me!]
[After arriving in Olivine and more or less settling in, Bertolt excused himself from Jean and the others to take some time for himself - and Marcel, of course. It's not that he doesn't enjoy their company, he just needs to get away and breathe and even take in some of the sights himself.
And, well, swing by the Pokemon Center too. Poor Marcel ended up getting a minor hit of Stun Spore thanks to 'playing' with a Paras just outside of town, so it's a good idea to get him fixed up before poking around.
At first he doesn't notice Anders or his Pokemon when he bolts into the building, but when he comes out - well, when Marcel shoves him out and plods behind his trainer, he catches a good, proper look at the tiny white fox, and Bertolt has to lightly bop his Arcanine's nose to get him to stop.]
[Anders almost catches himself smiling at the Arcanine -- it's a familiar creature, if a giant drooling dog. At least he's able enough to be pleasant around its trainer.
His hand strokes lightly over the Vulpix's head, and she stirs to flick her ears and blink up at the strangers.]
She's a Vulpix, from the Sevii Islands. An ice type.
[Bertolt hasn't heard much, if anything about the islands, but he had always been under the impression from magazines and the like that Vulpix were fire, just like a Growlithe.]
[Granted he's the sort to cherish just about anything, it only goes double for something uncommon. On the rare occasion he could get his hands on chocolate back home, he always did his best to make it last for as long as he could.]
Certainly. Not to say that something should only be appreciated if it's rare, but it's good not to take things for granted.
[Vulpix picks her head up and sniffs curiously in Bertolt and Marcel's direction as the boy inquires after her.]
Well, she's very mild mannered and gets along easily with other Pokemon from what I've seen. I don't know how she is with battling; she hasn't seemed too pressed to train, but then, I haven't encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.
Freya was like that when I first got her. She was terrified of the idea of it, but she's gotten more, uh... into it, I think, since she evolved? But she's not crazy like some of Jean's are. I'm still not sure how I feel about fighting with them myself to be honest.
[He gives a knowing laugh.] I think it would be difficult to achieve Blitz's level of... enthusiasm, for one.
I was very troubled with the idea at first, but most of them seem to have a good nature about it. Surely it isn't too awful if they all enjoy themselves and have their injuries promptly treated.
[He still doesn't know how Jean lets him get away with so much. He's waiting for the day he gets zapped awake in the tent he shares with him.]
It's definitely not the first thing I imagined he'd have after living with him for a couple years. I thought he'd have... I don't know, maybe a dog or something? Like mine.
[But Marcel is his and he is so very glad for that. Maybe when he starts trying to breed his own, Bertolt will hook Jean up with a little fire dog of his own.]
[The ocean was amazing. Especially now that they had arrived on the Sevii Islands, where the sand was warm, the sun bright in the sky and the water a bright azure blue, Armin couldn't get enough of it. He'd be pleased as anything to just sit there and stare at it for hours, to wander along the water line, searching for shells and other things brought in by the water.
But it had also made one thing impossible to ignore any longer: Armin couldn't swim. Not worth a single tiny damn. It had never been important during training, not when there were few rivers and lakes deep enough nearby to go swimming in. But here--
He'd need to learn. He had already made that decision. But swimming is not something you can learn from a book. Eren, he knows, doesn't swim much better than he does. And in any case, Eren is a lot of things, but a particularly good teacher is not one of them. Too easily distracted. Jean... honestly, while they are better friends now, Armin still remembers the times during their training that Jean had laughed when he had struggled to keep up. No, this was something he was not going to invite Jean to. Which only left--]
Bertolt, do you have a moment? There is something I want to ask.
[The Sevii Islands, as Bertolt had discovered, also wasn't the best place to have an Arcanine who still had his winter coat. It broke Bertolt's heart to keep Marcel either indoors or in his pokeball during the day, but he couldn't risk seeing his best friend overheat. Being a fire-type was one thing, but a fire-type that had a coat thick enough to make a whole sweater from the shedding?
Bertolt still took him out at sundown and at night to sniff around the beach, at least, and being indoors meant it was a good time for the Arcanine to bond with Ulrich and keep him out of trouble.
It also gave Bertolt the chance to get away and take time for himself, especially after the boat trip and the stress sitting on his shoulders since Olivine. Who knew he'd get sea sick after all these years? It had never happened before, but...]
If it's about me snapping a little on the boat, I'm sorry I wasn't feeling good|
Yes? We used to slip off to the lake we brought you and Eren to that night every now and then, but we were taught when we were kids too.
[It was sink or swim in that situation, really. It was also better to know how to swim and not need to do it, than need to do it and not know how. The last thing they all needed was someone like them to drown and lose that.]
You were always incredible at mastering anything physical we were made to do in training. You managed to graduate third, after all. So it is partially because I believe you are probably the most skilled of all of us. But also... Eren isn't actually very good at teaching things. He tries but he gets distracted easily and then forgets what we were doing. And Jean... I know he has changed a lot but I still feel a little too embarrassed to try out something like this in front of him. I think he might... laugh.
You are patient and I don't think you'd laugh. So, if nothing else, I think you'd make a better teacher than Eren and Jean right now. I know it's a rather forward request, but I really would love to learn. So if you wouldn't mind...
